Herbert H. Chen ((中国語:陈华生)) was a theoretical and experimental physicist known for his contributions in the field of neutrino detection. Chen immigrated to the United States from China as a child, and earned a BS in Physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1964. He went on to earn his PhD in Theoretical Physics from Princeton University in 1968. As a professor of physics at UC Irvine, Chen engaged in a long-term study of methods to detect neutrinos. In 1984, he advocated the use of large heavy water neutrino detectors, and collaborated with the research team that designed the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) based on his seminal papers. Chen died in November 1987 before the SNO was completed. The work was completed by Chen's collaborator, Arthur B.
